Do I need to compress my images before uploading them?

No. Upload the original once and add width, height or quality to the URL when you need a smaller version. The proxy renders that variant on request and caches it, so there is no build step and no second copy to keep in sync.

Which output formats can I convert my images to?

Accepted Answer

Add format=webp, format=jpg or format=png to the image URL and you get that format back. Leave the parameter off and the proxy delivers WebP. Quality is its own parameter from 0 to 100, and 75 to 90 is the recommended range.

How do I serve smaller images to phones without re-uploading?

Accepted Answer

Add a width to the same URL, such as width=400, and that size comes back. Every variant is rendered from the one original you uploaded, so a responsive srcset is a list of URLs instead of a folder full of pre-cut files.

What happens to a video after I upload it to Fairu?

Accepted Answer

Fairu converts it to three MP4 quality levels, low, medium and high, as soon as the upload finishes. You do not start a job for that. HLS is a bookable add-on and encodes its own stream separately, so with it active the player picks the level that fits the connection.

Do I need to run my own image server or CDN for this?

Accepted Answer

No. Rendering and delivery run on the Fairu proxy, so there is nothing to install and no worker to keep alive. Serving those same URLs from your own domain is a bookable add-on, and the setup is one CNAME record in your DNS.

Good content should work on limited bandwidth too.
