What do I have to set up before I can resize an image?

Nothing, as long as the file is public. You upload the file, take the URL Fairu gives you and add ?width=800 to it. A file you mark private is the exception: it needs a signed link, which you generate in Fairu or through the API.

Do I need to generate every image size in advance?

Accepted Answer

No. A srcset is the same address with different width values, and nothing is rendered until a browser actually asks for that size. The proxy then holds each render in cache for 24 hours, so a size that stays in use is rendered once.

How do I keep a crop from cutting off the main subject?

Accepted Answer

Pass focal in the URL next to width and height and the crop keeps that point. Fairu can also store a focal point on the file: you drag it into place in the file view, or let AI find it once the AI features are switched on for the workspace. Your GraphQL query applies it by asking for withStoredFocalPoint.

Does any of this work for video, or only for images?

It works for video too. Request a width on a video and the URL Fairu returns points at a WebP still at that size, so a poster image is one parameter instead of a separate export. The transcoded MP4 levels sit at the same address, picked with version=low, medium or high.

Question 5

What happens to the cached sizes when I replace a photo?

Accepted Answer

Replacing the original triggers a purge for that file in the background, so the cached variants are dropped without you touching anything. The URL in your CMS stays the same and the requests that follow render from the new source, with no cache-buster and no manual purge.
